A great day for New Bern High School and the Lacrosse program as seven senior Bears signed their letter of intent to play college lacrosse.
Head Lacrosse Coach Fleming couldn’t be more proud of the players as he described what it meant to the program, “The signings mean a lot to the program. Today was a historical day for the program. Signing seven guys in one class speak volumes of how far this program has become, in the last decade. That’s a testament to the people who have put a lot of time and effort into not only the students, the parents themselves but as volunteers to the youth program, to the high school program, and the athletic program at the high school. It really meant a lot for the athletic department and the Lacrosse program.”
These seven Bears proved their worth not only on the field but most importantly in the classroom. Coach Fleming enthusiastically described his feelings, “I couldn’t have been prouder of this group of young men that signed. It is a diverse group, it is really a representative of what New Bern Lacrosse has become. It has really been a stepping stone for a lot of kids to take their education and lacrosse, and their love of the game for lacrosse to the next level.”
Fleming described the group as “fun-loving” and “hard-working.” While their senior year ended much too soon, Coach has found the bright side of a shortened season, “They have that much more to look forward to next spring, to take their game to the next level and for the lion’s share of them, putting them in the hands of a reputable coach at Warren Wilson College, a great guy that I’ve gotten to know over the last six months. And for Tommy (Thomas Pittman) to have the excellent opportunity to go to Methodist and be a two-sport athlete (in both lacrosse and football).”
As of right now, ten 2020 Bears are committed to playing lacrosse next season (with two more also considering their options), who will join the six NBHS graduates from the 2018 & 2019 classes currently playing college lacrosse at schools like Wingate, Peace, St Andrews, Georgia Tech, NC State and UNC.
Coach Fleming discussed the potential to have 18 players playing college Lacrosse next year. “It means a lot for the program. It is really a motivating factor for the underclassmen, they realize they have opportunities, not only at smaller schools, or to play Division II or III on scholarship, but also for kids to go to a large school and play club lacrosse. The fact that they have here and have played with these guys, and to talk about this experience and what suits them, will really build this program in the direction we want it to go. I think the name of the game for them is representing New Bern High School, representing New Bern Lacrosse at the next level, developing and going enjoy lacrosse in the spring next year.”
Coach Fleming summed it all up today as an “emotional day” seeing a great group of players continuing the tradition of sending high-quality New Bern High School student-athletes to the next level.
